GLAST Status and Application to Microquasars
نویسنده
چکیده
The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is a next generation high energy gammaray observatory due for launch in Fall 2007. The primary instrument is the Large Area Telescope (LAT), which will measure gamma-ray flux and spectra from 20 MeV to > 300 GeV and is a successor to the highly successful EGRET experiment on CGRO. The LAT will have better angular resolution, greater effective area, wider field of view and broader energy coverage than any previous experiment in this energy range. An overview of the LAT instrument design and construction is presented which includes performance estimates with particular emphasis on how these apply to strudies of microquasars. The nature and quality of the data that will be provided by the LAT is described with results from recent detailed simulations that illustrate the potential of the LAT to observe gamma ray variability and spectra.

Binaries and GLAST
Radio and X-ray observations of the relativistic jets of microquasars show evidence for the acceleration of particles to very high energies. Signatures of non-thermal processes occurring closer in to the compact object can also be found. In addition, three binaries are now established emitters of high (>100 MeV) and/or very high (>100 GeV) energy gamma-rays. High-energy emission can originate f...
متن کاملThe proton low-mass microquasar: high-energy emission
Context. A population of unidentified gamma-ray sources is forming a structure resembling a halo around the Galactic center. These sources are highly variable, and hence they should be associated with compact objects. Microquasars are objects undergoing accretion with relativistic jets; if such an object has a low-mass, evolved, donor star, it might be found in the Galactic halo. If these low-m...
متن کاملA microquasar model applied to unidentified gamma-ray sources
Among unidentified gamma-ray sources in the galactic plane, there are some that present significant variability and have been proposed to be high-mass microquasars. To deepen the study of the possible association between variable low galactic latitude gamma-ray sources and microquasars, we have applied a leptonic jet model based on the microquasar scenario that reproduces the gamma-ray spectrum...
متن کاملGamma-ray Variability from Wind Clumping in Hmxbs with Jets
In the subclass of high-mass X-ray binaries known as “microquasars”, relativistic hadrons in the jets launched by the compact object can interact with cold protons from the star’s radiatively driven wind, producing pions that then quickly decay into gamma rays. Since the resulting gamma-ray emissivity depends on the target density, the detection of rapid variability in microquasars with GLAST a...

Recent High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) observations show that microquasars in high-mass systems are sources of very high energy γ-rays. A leptonic jet model for microquasar γ-ray emission is developed. Using the head-on approximation for the Compton cross section and taking into account angular effects from the star’s orbital motion, we derive expressions to calculate the spectrum of γ r...
